PALES Why don't you love me anyway?
Pales awoken to the sharp cry of a crow; dawn had approached. It had been four months since the disappearance of humans, living in the streets with his fellow pack members was glorious. Hunt, explore, sleep, anything they pleased. Ransacking buildings for munchies, ripping up couches in the nearby furniture store, causing havoc where ever they went. Pales was at the head of it all. It wasn't hard earning the Commander spot in the Legion, their hatred for the Mortis and Pales strong words rose their morale. Sitting comfortably at the top, the pale king would take down the wolf invaders; taking with then the forest and surrounding countryside. All he needed to do now was plan.
Moving stiffly to his side, the young male stood up from his mattress bed and surveyed the area. The hunters were already out on their morning patrol, though no prey was really needed since supplies were in flux. Everyone went about their daily activities of eating, chatting and leaving. No enemy threat, no sly vixen to keep him company.
"Today's gunna' be a drag" he thought to himself.

[/i] D A N G E R O U S - - - - - - - - - - mixer had not slept that night. actually, that was a lie. she slept for an hour - no more, no less. but nightmares had flooded her dreaming. she'd never admit that they scared her awake, she refused to believe she feared anything, but flashes of blood, ripping, tearing, eyes like her own being clawed out of her- no. no time to dwell on the past now. thus, she had pretended to sleep, but ears wary of any twigs snapping. enemies striking while they were asleep was a low blow, but it was possible.
the hatred for the Mortis was common amongst their pack. it was what drove them. fair enough. but there was something about that group of mangy, disgusting wolves that... attracted mixer. no. no, pales didn't like them, so neither did mixer. the thought of pales sent a warm feeling through the husky - he was the one living creature that she had put all her trust into. she could barely stand most of the other dogs and felines in the pack. of course, she had to tolerate them, she wouldn't want pales upset. pales.
her ice blue eyes fluttered open, and to her pleasant surprise, there he was. their leader, her leader. she stood up, without stretching - a big waste of time, she could be spending those seconds talking to pales, and she walked over to him. "i'd say 'good morning', but it's rather dull, isn't it?" she said bitterly, spitting the word 'dull' out. then again, to mixer, there wasn't such thing as a 'good' day.

Something obstructing his view, something black. Pales had been so intend on viewing his surroundings that he hadn't noticed Mixer, his head adviser, approach.
"Spot on" he said with a wink.
Oh what Pales loved more then his pack was to flirt carelessly. He didn't mean to be so charismatic, he just couldn't help to see the spark of excitement in their eyes.
He again turned from her, looking once more to his fellow members. Should he hold a meeting, organize a patrol? Truthfully, their was absolutely nothing to do today and this pleasured Pales deeply. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Maybe Mixer could accompany him on a little outing of fun.

[/i] D A N G E R O U S - - - - - - - - - - mixer eyed her leader closely. oh, how she admired him. oh, how she craved his attentions, his praise! yes, there was certainly something wrong with her. she worshipped pales, would do anything for him, and yet she wouldn't give a crap about anyone else. she loved that powerful aura about him. truth was, she had never thought about what she would do if ever there was a shift in power, if some other canine or feline or whatever pushed him to the ground and said, "hey, i'm the new boss here." it never crossed her mind - it could never happen because he was the leader. chances are, she'd follow wherever the power change was... but with mixer, you could never truly know.
he replied and winked at her which sent a ripple of pleasure through her body. she was oblivious to flirting, only feeling positive feedback and not the cause about it. and thus, mixer never flirted. she didn't do much for fun - the only thing that could keep her happy was being around someone she liked - such as pales. otherwise, she was sour and as bitter as you could get without dying of angst. "no problems arose throughout the night. but there have still been complaints from a few about those cockroaches around. bugs! i don't know why you don't just exile those whining bastards, complaining about bugs, wasting your time. other than that sour piece of news, no problems." she announced. she was the head advisor, she was in charge of reporting anything that was concerning the pack or herself.

Turning back, Pales saw that Mixer was still here. Good, they shall have fun indeed.
"no problems arose throughout the night. but there have still been complaints from a few about those cockroaches around. bugs! i don't know why you don't just exile those whining bastards, complaining about bugs, wasting your time. other than that sour piece of news, no problems." she announced.
Exile? Pales's young adviser female had always been a little hasty. Everything set her off. Everyone upset her. Though she was extremely loyal to him is what he liked. No room for rebellion in this pack.
"Exile!" he laughed, "If we exiled all the members that complained about those devil bugs, we'd have no pack left!"
A wide grin appeared on his face. Pales thought of the day ahead, some roaming the streets, pick up a stray female. He needed some stimulation after a long night alone. Though he was pack leader, his previous life as a stray still called to him.

[/i] D A N G E R O U S - - - - - - - - - - the pack leader started laughing - about what, mixer wasn't sure. but she laughed along, he might have told a joke? yes, maybe. ha ha ha, he was so funny. "if we exiled all the members that complained about those devil bugs, we'd have no pack left!" pales had said. it was a fair point, mixer guessed, but she didn't have the time or patience for those whiners. she didn't have much patience for anyone, really. "i suppose you are right, pales." she said warmly, her voice oozing as she said his name. "still, i don't know what else you can do about it. you can't go around squishing every bug in this bloody place. what do people expect?" she spat, then sighed.
she looked to her leader, her pales, and saw that he was grinning. mixer's smile soon followed, though it looked more like a snarl than anything else. she would be beautiful if she wasn't so sinister all the time. she was constantly angry, that rage that fuelled her almost destroyed her potential of being beautiful to someone. her face was almost always contorted into something twisted and evil, and her voice always snapped. but not to pales. "what's the plan for today, sir?" she was eager to start with whatever her master had in mind.

Pales knew this. He didn't know what these bugs did. They were huge, bigger then any bug he'd seen. But they were skittish, scurrying away to the cracks of the buildings if you approached one. They posed great annoyence but a minor threat.
Pales looked at Mixer, a wide, sinister grin planted on her face.
"She's a strange one alright." he thought to himself. The grin slowly fading from his mouth, replaced by a somewhat puzzled frown.
"Well, looks like theirs no set plans for today." he spoke, closing his eyes. "Unless you have plans of your own, Care to join me for a stroll? I mean, the pack basically runs itself."

[/i] D A N G E R O U S - - - - - - - - - - no plans set for today. huh. sounds unproductive, but... no, right - if the leader thought it was good, mixer went along with it. there had been days like this before, of course. tonnes of them. mixer was just a dog who liked to be distracted. if she was distracted, she was less likely to blow up at someone. not that she cared - she just figured raging at someone was a waste of time - she could be doing something better for her, like training. or exploring new grounds. though she never was that good at teamwork.
"unless you have plans of your own, care to join me for a stroll?" plans of her own. hah. what a joke. she didn't mix well with the other pack members, that was for sure. no one ever asked her to 'hang', and she liked it that way. they didn't deserve her time. but pales wasn't like them, was he? he was her.... he was her friend, and he liked her. and she was his friend, too. yes, that was right. so of course her reply would be yes. "a stroll? sounds okay." it came out a bit too bitter, so she rephrased herself. "sure. where to?" she liked the look in his eyes. and her ice blue eyes met his for a few seconds, but then she dropped her gaze. she found that she couldn't make direct eye contact with pales, not for long.

He saw her eyes quickly drop down after her acceptance. Everyone often do this, not looking Commander in the eye. He liked it. To earn respect from a group so full of variety takes skill.
"Well..." he started, going over lists in his head. "We could visit the place with the human beds down the street. There's probably a place to relax and a view of the sidewalk."
All Pales really wanted to do was get her alone. He enjoyed talking to people, stretching their limits, seeing what sets them off. Most of all, he loved to see how far he can get with a female.
Mixer was different though. A female coated in a hard shell and a solid center. She didn't seem to accept Pales's forwardness, it had always been like this. A challenge he liked.
Before Mixer could reply, Pales started toward the street expecting her to follow. He knew the way by heart and didn't need to think about it twice. It was his favorite place.

[/i] D A N G E R O U S - - - - - - - - - - a place with human beds. she wanted to groan - if it were anyone else but pales, she would hiss. they would reek of those scum. thank god they had all gone extinct or whatever. to be honest, mixer didn't care what happened to those... those... no. mixer didn't have a name bad enough to call them. every time she thought about it a vile rage bubbled up inside her, she could feel the red close in on her. she was jealous of whatever took them away - she would have liked to kill them herself. feel the blood seep through her claws, no, her talons. she had started to get into the habit of sharpening them on a rock, just in case. a sickening smile came to her face, then it dropped as she came back to reality.
"yes, okay. we can watch the sidewalk. you never know when those mangy pooches'll come round into our territory, right boss?" she replied with a snarl, referring to those wolves that thought they owned the whole place. gosh, pales sure did have the best ideas. no wonder he was leader - i mean, she wouldn't have been able to think of a strategy like that. and he said that there were no plans! so smart. mixer started grinning, her ice blue eyes lighting up at the thought of finding one of those stupid wolves and... and... perhaps now was not the time to think about it. she had to stay calm and not get too excited. the thoughts of irrational violence were pushed back to the depths of her messed up mind.

Making sure Mixer was still behind her, Pales lead on.
"Well come on, we're burning daylight." he called back.
The human bed place was in fact a furniture store downtown. The windows were busted open and dirty mattresses lye on the display place. From this view, Pales could see the street and the surrounding town. The atmosphere was so calm, it brought joy to his troubled head just thinking about it.
As he made his way down the street, more sharp calls of crows could be heard. The crows from this morning? Pales would never know. They had seemed to be circling something, off in the distance. Curiosity tingled in Pales's paws as to what the flying scavengers had found. But alas, he wanted desperately to join his female companion and woo her while lounging on a beaten bed.

[/i] D A N G E R O U S - - - - - - - - - - that's true, they were wasting time just hanging around. mixer followed him, picking up the pace as he lead on, her paws welcoming the biting ground. they were well worn from her days as a stray. no, she didn't consider herself as a stray. she considered herself as... a stranger. yes, that word described her perfectly. you couldn't get much stranger than mixer. and most knew it. that was probably why she couldn't say she was a popular canine around their pack. they knew not to mess with her, she had almost killed a pack member once. or twice - she had lost count of how many in-pack fights she'd been in.
the stranger wandered forward, a determined look in her ice blue eyes. she glanced at pales, who caught sight of something, then dismissed it. she followed where his eyes were looking, and saw a group of circling crows. what sharp eyes he had! but... what were those crows doing? she smelled something wrong all over that. "pales, look - those crows." she acknowledged her concern to him. it was instinctual, reporting anything that looked out of place. she didn't give a fuck about any of her pack members, but she did care about the pack as a whole. if it weren't for the mass of members, where would the power be? what would be the point of anything? she wouldn't have a position anymore. that's why she did her job. she considered herself selfless and 'for-the-team'. others just considered her a cold hard bitch. of course, no one said that to her face, or their own faces would be in tatters.

It had seemed that Mixer had caught on too. Surely a dead rabbit or rat wouldn't cause this much attention in the mangy, feathered beasts.
"pales, look - those crows." she acknowledged.
This troubled Pales deeply. God only knows what new threat to his family had arouse. Shaking the thoughts of a lovely date with his companion, the commander turned to Mixer.
"This is strange. Maybe it's nothing, maybe it's something. I don't know." he addressed, eyes deep with concern. "I want to be able to known that we didn't walk away from this and set our up pack for danger. We need to check it out."
The town had been quite for the past four months of the humans disappearance. Pales knew this was too good to be true, whatever had wiped out the humans was still lurking somewhere; waiting, watching. The threat of the wolves and on top of that, some human killer that could do away with all of us. The male shook his head, unable to think anymore on what might have come.

mixer smiled that vicious smile. yes, she was something of beauty - just the wrong kind of beauty. the beauty that bites. and that smile of hers, the twisted one, that malicious grin, only reinforced it. and when it came about, one could only guess what was going on in her head. because something was making her smile, and that couldn't possibly be good.
her ice blue eyes saw the concern in his, and admiration flooded her compact body. yes, that was a leader. no wonder she had put her faith into him! "yes. yes, yes. that is an excellent idea indeed." the excitement in her bones was growing, beginning to contort her facial muscles into an even more malicious smile.
her pace grew, eyes locked on her target. if it was something that could hurt her pack leader, she would take care of it. no question about it, and no doubt. she was a machine, programmed to hurt, to kill, or her favourite - to torture. she was certainly one of a kind, nobody got that sort of pleasure from it except mixer. which was probably why pales kept her so close. he'd say kill, she'd go for it. not many pack members could say that they had that same dedication.

"yes. yes, yes. that is an excellent idea indeed."
Pales was glad she approved. She was one of the only dogs that listened to his every word. Jumped at his every command. Indeed, Mixer was a clockwork machine to him it seemed. He thought of her a bit brainwashed, a bit too trustful. Had he trained her like this? Had he forced her to bend to his will?
Pales shook his head again, this time harder. There was no time for petty questions about feelings. There was a greater task at stake.
With the flick of his tail, he shot off. With great speed, the Commander leaped trash cans, turned corners at a dime, no interest if Mixer was keeping up or not. Wanting to get there before the threat went into hiding was top priority. No time for slow-pokes.
Pales stopped short, gravel digging into his paw-pads. What was set out before him let a fowl taste in the back of his throat.
